Why Olive Oil and Beeswax

Most skincare starts with a long ingredient list and works backward to a story. We went the other way: we started with two ingredients people have used on their skin for thousands of years, and asked how little we could add to them.

Olive oil

Extra virgin olive oil is pressed from olives without heat or chemical solvents. It's rich in naturally occurring fats that soften dry skin and leave it feeling supple, which is why it has been part of daily skin care around the Mediterranean for generations.

Ours is single-origin extra virgin olive oil from Palestine, one of the oldest olive-growing regions in the world. Single-origin means it comes from one place and one harvest, not a blend, so every batch is consistent and traceable. We name the variety and harvest year on every lot.

Beeswax

Olive oil on its own is liquid and absorbs quickly. Beeswax turns it into a balm. It holds the oil in a soft, solid form you can carry in a tin, and it leaves a light, protective finish on the skin, the reason it's been used in salves and balms for centuries.

We buy our beeswax one lot at a time, so color and scent stay the same from tin to tin.

What we leave out

Our balms contain no water, so there's nothing for a preservative to protect. We don't add fragrance, essential oils, vitamin E, shea or cocoa butter, or fillers. Just two good ingredients, done well.

That's the whole idea behind the name. Mel is Latin for honey, the source of beeswax. Zayt (زيت) is Arabic for olive oil. Melzayta is what happens when you put the two together and stop there.
