How to Care for Dry Hands, Simply

Dry hands don't need a complicated routine. A few simple habits make the biggest difference.

1. Go easy on hot water

Very hot water strips skin of its natural oils. Wash with lukewarm water instead, and use a gentle soap.

2. Pat, don't rub

Pat your hands dry with a towel rather than rubbing them, and leave them just slightly damp.

3. Seal it in right away

The best moment to apply a balm is right after washing. Warm a small amount between your fingertips and work it into the backs of your hands, your knuckles and around your nails, the spots that dry out first.

4. Overnight help

For extra-dry hands, apply a slightly thicker layer before bed and wear cotton gloves overnight. You'll notice softer hands by morning.

5. Protect them

Wear gloves for washing dishes, cleaning and cold weather. Water, cleaning products and wind are the biggest causes of rough hands.

6. Keep a tin within reach

Hands stay soft when you take care of them often, not just occasionally. Keep a tin by the sink, in your bag or in the car.

If your hands are cracked and bleeding, or dryness doesn't improve, talk to a doctor or dermatologist.
